Troy, in short

A UNESCO World Heritage Site southwest of the Dardanelles, and the setting of the Trojan War. Nine cities were built on top of one another here across some 3,500 years, and the excavated section shows the layers stacked in the trench walls.

Set expectations: this is an archaeological site, not a monument. What it offers is the ground itself, and the sheer depth of continuous occupation.

What it costs

The guided day trip is u20ac125 separately. Included on the pass.

The day

Hotel pick-up between 06:00 and 07:00 from centrally located hotels, then an air-conditioned minibus to Eceabat and across the Dardanelles. It is around 350 km and five to five and a half hours' drive each way.

How long on site

Two to three hours covers the excavations comfortably. A reconstruction of the wooden horse stands at the entrance u2014 cheerfully inauthentic, and everyone photographs it anyway.

What to see

The layered defensive walls of Troy VI and VII, the ramp and gate, the sanctuary and the odeon. The site museum, opened in 2018, is excellent and does much of the interpretive work the ruins cannot.

  • Around five to five and a half hours each way, which makes for a long day.
  • For anyone drawn to Homer or to archaeology, yes. If you want dramatic standing ruins, Ephesus delivers more.
  • It is a modern reconstruction at the entrance. It is not an artefact, and it is still the photograph everyone takes.
