It is the single most useful thing you can carry in Istanbul after your pass. Fares are cheaper with it than without, and transfers within a set window are discounted.

How to use it
Tap on at the gate or as you board. One card can be used for more than one person on most surface transport u2014 tap once per passenger u2014 though the metro barriers require one tap per person through the gate.

Topping up
Machines at every metro and tram station take cash and cards. Keep a little credit on it u2014 running out at a barrier at rush hour is an avoidable annoyance.
