Mount Nemrut
King Antiochus I of Commagene built the summit sanctuary in the first century BC u2014 colossal seated statues of gods and of himself, whose heads have since toppled and now sit at ground level facing the sunrise. The mountain is 2,134 metres and the summit is reached on foot from the car park.
When to go
April to June and September to November. The summit is snowbound and inaccessible in winter, and midsummer is punishingly hot on the approach.
What to expect
Most itineraries take in sunrise or sunset at the summit, which is the reason to go. It is cold at the top before dawn even in summer u2014 take a jacket regardless of the temperature at the hotel.
