The peninsula guarding the Dardanelles, and the site of the 1915 campaign that cost around half a million casualties on both sides across eight months of stalemate.
For British, Irish, Australian and New Zealand visitors it is often the most affecting day of a trip to Turkey. The cemeteries are immaculate, the trench lines are still legible in the ground, and in places the opposing positions are close enough to throw a stone between them.

The day
An early start and a long drive u2014 roughly five hours each way u2014 taking in ANZAC Cove, Lone Pine, Chunuk Bair, the Turkish memorial at u00c7anakkale Martyrs' and several Commonwealth war cemeteries.
When to go
April to June and September to October are the most comfortable. Anzac Day on 25 April brings dawn services and very large numbers u2014 book far ahead if that is the date you want, and expect a different sort of day.
What to bring
Walking shoes, layers and water. Much of the day is outdoors on exposed ground, and the peninsula is windy even in summer.
Worth knowing
Turkish guides present the campaign from both sides, including the Ottoman defence under Mustafa Kemal u2014 later Atatu00fcrk u2014 whose reputation was made here. His 1934 words to the mothers of the Allied dead are inscribed at ANZAC Cove and are usually read out.
