The centrepiece is a 360-degree painted panorama under a dome, with the painted surface running into a sculpted foreground so there is no visible join. You stand in the middle of the assault.

Getting there
It is in the Topkapu0131 district u2014 the old gate in the land walls, not the palace, which confuses plenty of visitors. Take the T1 tram or the metro to Topkapu0131-Ulubatlu0131. It sits beside the walls the siege was fought over, which is the right place for it.
How long to allow
About an hour across the three floors. The panorama itself takes 15 to 20 minutes to absorb properly.

The lower floors set up the siege: Mehmed II's preparations, the enormous bombards cast for the walls, the chain strung across the Golden Horn, and the ships famously hauled overland to get around it.
It opened in 2009 after three years of construction, covers 3,000 square metres and draws over a million visitors a year u2014 largely Turkish, which gives it a different atmosphere from the Sultanahmet sights.
