The Church of Divine Peace stands in the first courtyard of Topkapu0131 Palace and was the first cathedral of Constantinople, predating Hagia Sophia.
It is one of the very few Byzantine churches in the city never converted into a mosque, so the interior survives largely bare u2014 no tiles, no calligraphy, just brick, apse and a stark cross in the semi-dome. The acoustics are exceptional, and it is used for concerts.
Opening hours
Open daily except Tuesdays, 09:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:00.
What it costs
Walk-up entry is 500 Turkish lira, around u20ac10, and queues build in peak season. Entry with a guided tour is included on the pass.
Getting there
It sits in Topkapu0131 Palace's first courtyard, immediately inside the main gate. That courtyard is a public park, so you can reach the church without a palace ticket. Take the T1 tram to Sultanahmet or Gu00fclhane.
How long to allow
Ten to fifteen minutes on your own, 20 to 30 with a guide. Go in the morning while the courtyard is quiet, and pair it with Topkapu0131 or the Archaeological Museums, both a few steps away.
